NATURE CALENDAR

Throughout 2009 we'll be posting information about significant natural events here on Galiano, as reported by local residents. To add your observations to the calendar, send an email to galianonaturalists (at) gulfislands.co

FEBRUARY

• February 4: Little Brown Bats seen flying on mild evenings.

• February 9: Hairy Manzanita in bloom on Bodega Ridge.

• Febriaru 11: Northern Saw-whet Owl heard calling mid-island.

• February 26: First returning migrant Rufous Hummingbird seen (a male).

MARCH

• March 4: First returning migrant Turkey Vulture seen.

• March 7: First night when the evening chorus of male Pacific Tree Frog breeding calls could be heard in wetlands in the south of the island.

• March 10: Thousands of gulls now in Active Pass, mostly the smaller species (Mew Gull, Bonaparte's Gull); the spring herring run has begun in the Strait of Georgia, with massive spawn happening on the east coast of Vancouver Island in the vicinity of Parksville.
